There are many reasons to give your bedroom a new look. In some cases, you may just be tired of its current appearance. In other cases, you may have an injury and need to rearrange it to better use a wheelchair or walker. Sometimes, you may need to rearrange your bedroom because you have a new human or four-legged companion. Regardless of why you want to rearrange your bedroom, following these tips can help.

Declutter First

Many people use their bedrooms as dumping grounds for things that do not fit elsewhere. Therefore, the first step to rearranging your bedroom is to remove the clutter. It may help to take everything out of the room and create three piles: one pile for trash, one for things to sell or donate, and the final pile for things you are going to keep.

Measure Before Moving Furniture

Grab a tape measure and some graph paper. Make a diagram of the things you cannot move in your room, such as the closets and windows. Then, measure the size of the furniture, such as a queen-size bed, that you will be putting back into the room. Pencil them in on your diagram so that once you start moving furniture, you will only have to move it once.

Create a Focal Point

You should anchor the room by creating a focal point. Usually, this is your bed. Deciding on its location first will allow other things to fit around it naturally. For example, when you know the bed’s location, then you know where nightstands need to go. Putting an ultra-plush mattress on the bed frame can make it look luxurious.

Make Sure the Space Is Functional

Creating distinct zones in your bedroom will make it more functional. While experts recommend using your bedroom primarily for sleep, understandably, that’s not always possible. To maximize your room’s usefulness, then, think about the activities you do there, such as sleeping, watching TV and dressing. Then, create a distinct zone for each of them.

Use Vertical Space

You can use your bedroom’s walls to increase functionality in many ways. For instance, consider installing high shelves for things that you may use sparingly. If the room is small, consider elevating the bed so you can put a desk or table under it. You can also make the room look more finished by hanging artwork or mirrors on the walls to form a unified grouping. If you use your desk sparingly or iron only occasionally, install options that you can fold up against the wall when not in use. Consider hanging vegetable baskets from the wall to hold accessories and other small items. You can also put a pegboard on the wall and hang your jewelry on it.

Tackle the Closet

Your bedroom closet has lots of useful space that you may be underutilizing. Add hooks or hangers to the closet door to create additional storage space. Think about adding an extra rod to your closet and using space-saving hangers. Installing shelving above the rods will allow you to store many things. A great option is to store things in plastic boxes with the same design so they stack easily. Labeling them clearly will help you find items at a glance without having to look in every bin.

Install More Power Outlets

Many homes were built before electrical devices were common. If your bedroom is in an older home, consider having new power outlets installed. Otherwise, carefully evaluate the devices that you own to see how many you can charge with the same charger or wirelessly. This can help eliminate cords running in multiple directions, making it easier to get around the room.

Add Additional Storage

In addition to utilizing the space in your closet and adding shelves to the walls, there are other ways to add storage to your bedroom. Your bedroom will be much more functional once it has a home for everything. Depending on your decor, a vintage trunk or chest might give you space to store larger items. Consider adding a decorative ladder to the room and using it to hang blankets, scarves and other items.

Incorporate Dual-Purpose Furniture

Choosing furniture with dual purposes is essential, especially in smaller bedrooms. For example, consider a bed with a bookstand headboard on which you can store books or decorative items. In your dressing area, consider using a chair with a hidden storage compartment. You may also want to incorporate a vanity with various storage options. And keep in mind that adjustable beds make it easier to watch TV.

Use a Restful Color Scheme

Your bedroom is designed for sleeping, and choosing the right color scheme will help you get a great night’s sleep. Soft shades of blue, green, or lavender can help create a tranquil environment. Neutral colors like gray, beige, or light shades of white also work well, providing a versatile backdrop for various decor styles and allowing for easy coordination with bedding and furnishings. Alternatively, muted earth tones such as soft browns or warm taupe can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
