You’ve opted for carpet as your flooring of choice. Perhaps it was the appearance, sound-reducing qualities, or simply just the comfort factor that swayed you? Either way, you’ve still got more decisions to make! With so many different styles, colors and fibers available, it can be tricky to know where to start.
We take a look at the factors to bear in mind when choosing a carpet.
Which room are you redecorating?
Carpet in certain areas of your home will naturally see more wear and tear than in others. It’s a good idea, therefore, to opt for a more resilient material for hallways and stairs. Nylon, for example, offers fantastic crush-resistance.
If you’re looking for something more luxurious for a bedroom, however, polyester is a great choice. While it doesn’t offer as much crush-resistance (which might be a consideration if you have a lot of heavy furniture), it is inherently stain-resistant, and feels amazing underfoot.
You may also want to consider what direction the room is facing. Does it get a lot of sunlight? Whilst nylon is long-lasting and cleans well, it does have a tendency to fade.
Are you working within a budget?
If you’re renovating your home, it’s likely you have a rough budget in mind. Luckily, there are so many options available that it’s not hard to find something to suit your budget. Whilst you might opt for nylon for hallways and staircases where there’s high foot traffic, you might decide that polypropylene, polyester or triexta are more budget-friendly for other areas of the home. Even within these materials, price will vary, so be sure to do your research, as well as factor in the cost of installation.
Does it work with your current decor?
If you’re only recarpeting one or two rooms, you’ll likely want to make sure it works with the rest of your interiors. One of the great things about carpet is that it comes in so many different colors, textures, and patterns that it’s easy to find something that’s suitable for your unique style.
Do you have a big (or messy!) family?
A household with multiple children and pets has very different requirements to a home with, say, one adult couple. If regular spills, accidents and muddy paws are an inevitability in your home, then you might wish to prioritize durability and opt for something easy to clean. Again, it’s important to do your research. Did you know that whilst polyester is stain-resistant, it can be difficult to remove dirt and oils? Nylon, on the other hand, cleans very well. Polypropylene has low water absorption and is easy to clean, so this is another popular option with pet owners.
Whatever material you decide on, remember, a regular professional clean can work wonders for improving the appearance of your carpets, as well as extending their lifespan.
Always have your carpet installed by a professional too, to ensure optimum results.
